Margam Park is a long standing British Venue. Oli Beckinsale won his first race here in 1991!
Dan also used to live locally for 2 ½ years...however he has never raced here, but knew of its reputation for great racing on good course.
He wasn’t disappointed. A great but short lap (Dan McConnell WC Round 1 winner was getting round in sub 13minutes), with tough climbs and steep loose descents.
The Masters lined up at 3pm with the temperature at above 25degrees. Dan lined up on the second row after missing a few rounds, he was 15th in the series. A good start got him to 5th place at the first corner, the leaders within easy reach.
He went to skip past riders 3 and 4 and felt a pop at his foot and realised that his shoe closure had just broken. Having his foot loose in his shoe was not good for the power.
He tightened the second closure hoping it would keep his foot in and pressed on to 3rd position. Dan could feel the power lacking with the loose shoe and it was difficult to move the bike around in the technical sections. Lap 1 he was holding 3rd behind Jonny Pugh and Phil Morris (the other podium guys from round 3). With a hard Charging Chris lever in 4th. Dan decided to try and hold a top 5 position and play damage control as with the extra tight shoe his foot was beginning to get painful ( and blue ? ).
Halfway around the second lap Dan's race ended as he hit a large rock and flatted his tyre.
A long walk back to the van and an even longer drive home.....racing can be cruel sometimes....
Next race the National championships.....fingers crossed everything goes right there.
Good luck Dan !
